What inspired you to start your business?

I grew up in a family that was artistic and creative. For example, my father was a leather worker, wood carver, and carpenter. My mother enjoyed needle work and was an amazing seamstress. Watching their passion for creating helped to inspire that passion within myself. In addition, I love natural materials and products made from them. As my moto is “you can never have enough handbags,” it was not a big leap to begin creating handbags and other leather items. Initially, I started making items for myself, but then began to create them for others. I opened an online shop to reach a wider audience and provide a secure platform for purchasing.

How do you describe your brand?

My business entails an ongoing creative process, as each step is carried out in my studio by myself. I have had training in art, sewing, silversmithing, painting, and pattern drafting; however, I believe in being a lifetime learner and continue to hone my skills and knowledge.

When creating a new bag I begin by sketching out variations of an idea and continue to refine the design until I find a design that resonates with me. My next step is drafting a pattern by hand. The prototype is where I work out the fine details. I hand cut the leather and fabric as needed. The next steps include skiving, gluing, sewing, and installing hardware. In most cases, I will finish all the raw edges to insure the longevity of the item.

I am very careful about sourcing the materials I need. My leather comes from tanneries in North America or Europe that are environmentally responsible and utilize hides from the food industry that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. In addition, I source my hardware from Canadian small businesses.

What’s your bestselling product & why do you think they’re so popular?

Crossbody bags are my biggest seller and range from the small minimalist design to the larger medium sized crossbody bags.

Crossbody bags are very versatile and easier to use. Being made from leather, they have a longevity that other material would not provide. I am seeing repeat customers that are still using their crossbody bags every day and have done so for a number of years. Many of the bags that I make are made from a natural full grain leather that patinas beautifully over time.

What’s your favourite product from your own shop?

I really like the Western Style Tote Bag and the similarly designed crossbody bag. I feel the design is unique and seamlessly blends western style with contemporary fashion.

What’s your favourite local British Columbia business?
