Lowen’s Natural Skincare is a Canadian skin care brand based in Calgary, AB that creates bath & body products like lip balm, shave balm, diaper balm, vegan shampoo and more.
What inspired you to open your business?
Since being in Junior Achievement in my teens, I always wanted to have a business. This drive sat on the back burner for a number of years, even after finishing Pharmacy school and starting my career. When my daughter Lowen was born, she had issues with skin sensitivity and developed a terrible diaper rash that wouldn’t go away. After tying available products on the market and having minimal positive results, I decided to draw from my compounding training to develop an innovative natural diaper balm using unrefined, locally sourced ingredients. This product, now called Lowen’s Bum Balm Blues, fixed her rash in days and based on this success, we started to test the “market” with our friends and family members. They too experienced quick and drastic improvements so the idea to market and sell came to form. Since developing Bum Balm Blues, we have since created other balms, lotions, cleansers, etc. All using locally sourced, unrefined ingredients, keeping safety and efficacy in mind.
How do you describe your brand?
We’re not your average personal care company. We strive to minimize waste, so we don’t use extra packaging and avoid single use plastics. We source as many ingredients as possible from local producers, supporting the local economy as well as minimizing our carbon footprint in purchasing ingredients from all over the world. The ingredients we can’t get close to home (shea butter, coconut oils) are sourced from small maker coops in Ghana. In terms of the product sources, the honey and beeswax we used is sourced from our professionally managed bee hives, located about a mile from our home office. Finally, ALL of our products have been Verified by the Environmental Working Group, an achievement that very few companies have achieved, indicating that our line is safe and effective.
What’s your bestselling product?
Why do you think people love it?
There are not a lot of clean shaving products on the market. Smooth Criminal works exceptionally well for all skin types (especially for those with sensitive skin) thanks to the oat and organic canola oils as well as out treatment free honey (sourced from our hives).
What’s your favourite product from your shop?
Any of the lip balms. I’m a lip balm addict so it is fitting that I created a company that makes them. It is incredibly dry in Calgary, so having a stick (or 5) on hand is a must for me and we do have incredible flavours, with creamsicle being my favourite.
