What inspired you to start your business?
I’ve always had that drive to build something of my own, but there were definitely moments where I thought about giving up. My wife Selvia, who’s always been my biggest supporter, kept encouraging me to stick with it. She’s always loved candles, but we could never really enjoy them together because most would trigger headaches or my asthma. Then a friend threw out the idea of making our own and that’s what lit the spark. We started experimenting, and before long, we realized we could create something better: candles that were safe, meaningful, and aligned with the kind of brand we always wanted to build.
How do you describe your business?
Wick of Hope is a small-batch candle brand that my wife and I run together from our home studio in London, Ontario. Each candle is hand-poured using a clean-burning coconut soy wax blend, paired with wooden wicks for a natural crackle and a warm, cozy burn. We only use phthalate-free and paraben-free fragrance oils, and some of our scents are blended with essential oils as well. Since I’m sensitive to synthetic fragrances, we spent a lot of time testing and refining each formula to make sure our candles are both subtle in scent and effective.
What makes our business unique is the deeper purpose behind it. With every purchase, we donate $1 to support survivors of human trafficking, children in need, and underserved communities in developing countries. We also care deeply about the planet, our partnership with Greenspark helps us contribute to reforestation, plastic recovery, and carbon offset initiatives. For us, it’s about more than just candles it’s about creating something that does good.
We didn’t come from a background in candle-making. We studied what professional makers were doing, then learned through trial and error until we truly perfected our craft. It’s been hands-on from day one, and that’s what makes it personal.
What’s your bestselling product & why do you think it’s so popular?
Our Signature Discovery Kit is our bestseller.
It includes 12 tealight samples featuring our core scent lineup. Since candle shopping online can be tricky especially with something as personal as fragrance, this kit gives customers a chance to explore our scents before committing to a full-size candle. It’s become a go-to option for first-time buyers who want to get a true feel for what our brand is all about.
What’s your personal favourite product?
Warm Blanket Nights Candle is my favourite candle and our second best seller! I just love the cozy feeling when you smell the cinnamon and vanilla notes while it’s burning. It evokes emotion of my favourite cinnamon treats while at home.
