What inspired you to start your business?

I was born in Vancouver, studied journalism in Halifax, and spent nearly a decade producing breaking news for CBC—my career has always revolved around telling authentic Canadian stories. That passion took me overseas, first to Istanbul to launch Turkey’s first English-language broadcaster, and then to Tokyo, helping Japanese journalists share compelling narratives with a global audience. I returned to Canada to get my MBA at McGill University in Montreal. That’s where I got the idea for Canada Colour.

Living abroad, I constantly searched for a meaningful piece of Canada to bring with me—a tangible reminder of my roots—but what I wanted simply didn’t exist. Everything felt either mass-produced, cliché, or lacked the authenticity I craved. That’s why I teamed up with Tanya Saggi, a talented designer, to create Canada Colour: modern, minimalist prints inspired by iconic Canadian symbols that genuinely reflect our evolving national identity.

How do you describe your business?

Based in Montreal, Canada Colour creates modern, minimalist prints that celebrate Canada’s unique heritage and evolving national identity. Our designs are inspired by iconic provincial and territorial symbols, meticulously crafted to resonate with both familiarity and contemporary aesthetics.

The Icon Series is intentionally familiar, paying homage to Canada’s national, provincial and territorial flags. The goal is to refresh symbols Canadians instantly recognize, creating prints that evoke pride and nostalgia in a contemporary way.

The Bauhaus Series emphasizes bold geometric shapes, balanced forms, and sophisticated colour palettes. It’s a fresh, abstract approach that allows Tanya to capture the spirit and character of each region in a new and compelling visual language.

Founder Brett Kwan leverages his extensive experience as an award-winning journalist and MBA graduate from McGill to oversee the strategic direction and storytelling elements of the brand.

Every print is thoughtfully designed by Tanya Saggi, whose international design experience spans New Delhi, London, and Montreal, including renowned publications like Elle Magazine. Tanya utilizes a refined approach rooted in clean lines, bold geometric shapes, and intentional colour palettes, embracing principles of simplicity and timelessness.

Our production process is firmly Canadian and have worked hard to ensure each product sold in Canada is designed and printed domestically. We use premium-quality, enhanced matte paper known for durability and exceptional visual clarity. Every piece includes free shipping across Canada, aligning with our commitment to accessibility and affordability.

What’s your bestselling product & why do you think it’s so popular?

Canada Icon Print

Our best-selling product is the Canada Icon print, and it’s no surprise why. With ongoing U.S. tariffs, rhetoric around becoming the “51st state,” and the upcoming Canadian election, there’s a renewed emphasis on what unites us as Canadians rather than what divides us. The maple leaf—bold, timeless, and universally recognizable—is a powerful testament to our shared identity and values, reminding us that despite our differences, we’re strongest together.

What’s your personal favourite product?

My favourite Canada Colour product is the BC Bauhaus print. Tanya’s thoughtful reinterpretation of the British Columbia flag into a minimalist sunset scene instantly transports me back to evenings spent at English Bay with friends, watching the sun set over the ocean.
