How would you describe your business?
Crate Designs uses Southern Yellow Pine for all its products. This is a hard and heavy Pine that only grows in the Southern US. It is unlike any Pine grown here in Canada.
Just as the lumber is unique in furniture building, many of the manufacturing techniques are non-traditional. We produce a product that is durable enough to be able to back it with a lifetime structural warranty. Originall available in one colour only, we now offer a choice of 6 finishes.
What was the inspiration to open your business?
The opportunity to buy an ongoing furniture factory out of bankruptcy.
What’s your bestselling product?
Our best seller, and what we are famous for, is bunk beds.
Why do you think it’s so popular?
Crate Designs’ bunk beds are built strong enough for adult use and are available in 3 different styles. All styles can be ordered in sizes from twin to queen and all combinations of those sizes. Construction is either 3 layer laminated ends or mortise and tenon. All furniture is made here in Chesley by a skilled team who average 14 years of experience with the company.
What’s your favourite product from your own shop?
My favourite item is a TimberFrame bunk bed, in our Storm finish. Both the bunk bed style and the finish colour are unique items that were developed in-house by our talented team.
