Knot You Knot Me
Business Name: Knot You Knot Me
Based In: Toronto, Ontario
Products Include: Handmade fiber jewellery
How would you describe your business?
Most of the knots I use, I learned from different macrame books. Many of them are decorative knots and some are functional knots used for sailing or climbing. The more I practiced, the better and more consistent my knotting got. Each necklace or earring starts with me learning a new knot, and experimenting with different ways to make it a wearable unique piece. I try to use a variety of knots, so that there is something for everyone. I only use cotton rope, and my main rope is made from recycled fibers, which allows many of my pieces to be washable.
What inspired you to open your shop?
My business started it out as a hobby. In the beginning, I was mostly making macrame wall hangings and plant hangers ( on request from my mom). After a few months, I started making little macrame necklaces inspired by my wall hangings. I would wear them to my day job, and had a few people request to buy. My first sales were actually pieces that I wore. I started getting more requests from my co workers and eventually decided to open an Etsy shop where I sold one of a kind pieces.
What’s your best selling product and why is it so popular?
My current best seller is my MABEL chainlink necklace. It is made by using the chainlink knot and is quite versatile.
Customers love the versatility of the MABEL. It is one of my longer pieces and is a great statement necklace that works well with any outfit. It is made from recycled cotton rope, which makes the piece quite lightweight.
I offer my pieces in a variety of colours. I like to keep my offerings of colours based on the seasons, with a core of 4 or 5 colours that I carry all year round.
What’s your favourite product from your own shop?
My favourite piece right now are my NOMI earrings. They are wrapped cotton rope link earrings. They are very lightweight and I wear them almost daily.
What’s your favourite local Toronto business?
My favourite local business is The Curated Market Co. They have 2 locations in Toronto and carry an amazing selection of local businesses, from art, jewellery, ceramics and candles. The shop owner does an amazing job curating and merchandising the store. And yes, you can find my pieces there too.
