Describe your brand:

I spent many months making door replicas using all different types of art mediums. I am a self taught artist who eventually found plaster casting and molding. I knew this was how I could share my love of doors and create my small business.

But I didn’t know if making small doors was enough to make a business out of. I thought about how most of the doors in my many photos had potted planters and how I myself love a front door planter. Taking inspiration from the desert plants I adore, I added front porch pots to my sculptures for Air Plants. I love the idea of living art, adding a bit of green to any space, and now my art had a purpose as well as a function.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always loved architecture and doors in particular. During trips to Europe, the southern US and Mexico I would take many, many pictures of beautiful amazing doors. When Covid shut down the world and I wasn’t sure when we would travel again, I realized I wanted to make and share my love of doors.

A quote from Joseph Campbell inspired me to start The Potted Door – “Follow your bliss, and the universe will open doors where there were only walls”.

What’s your bestselling product & why do you think it’s popular?

My bestseller is an Adobe house inspired air plant holder. It is a 6 1/2″ stand with 3 vigas, wooden posts, and a wood beam over an intricately carved door. The cobblestone road with a mini pot for air plants or dried flowers make the L shaped plant stand. It’s offered in 4 colours but by far Sunset Orange is the most popular.

My customers love this 3 post style, I think its the combination of the wooden posts and beams and it is my most intricately carved door style. All of my door styles are completely handmade, and are a truly unique way to display air plants. Customers have told me my doors remind them of where they grew up, travels they have had or want to go on, and love giving them as gifts! I hand sculpt each door style then, cast them in a very fine grade white cement. After curing I hand finish and paint each style. I love working with customers to make custom colours, or combine different style to make custom doors for personal pieces. I recently added an option to purchase high quality artificial air plants as add ons. Great for gifting! Gift doors arrive complete with plants in the mini front door pots!

What’s your personal favourite product from your shop right now?

It’s very hard for me to pick a personal favourite style. I love making them all!
