How would you describe your business?
The Cedar Nook is a luxury, sustainable Canadian skincare brand based in Toronto.
We are a brand to help us all slow down and enjoy the healing powers that only the Canadian forest can provide.
Our products are made with locally hand-foraged botanicals from the Ontario forest.
All of our products are small-batch and hand poured, made with EcoCert Organic and Fairtrade ingredients, and our containers are all reusable/recyclable or compostable – with no extra packaging.
The Cedar Nook is woman owned and operated by Sarah Higgins, an organic skincare formulator and herbalist. Sarah studied at Formula Botanica, and The Herbal Academy.
What was the inspiration to start The Cedar Nook?
I fell in love with plants while studying Herbalism, and realized that the plants I was learning about were actually surrounding me and I didn’t have to import them from another country. I was yearning for natural skincare products that I could feel connected to, and after learning that these plants that fill up Canada’s forests, have healing benefits and nutrients we can use, I feel in love with the idea of allowing the plants themselves to heal us.
What’s your bestselling product?
Why do you think people love it?
It smells like a walk in the woods! We infuse our salve with hand-harvested tree sap fresh from Balsam Fir trees! No added essential oils, or synthetic fragrances. We use local beeswax, shea butter, calendula infused organic olive oil, and some vitamin E. Balsam Fir sap is antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-septic, so it’s amazing at healing any type of wound. It has helped many costumers with their eczema, and it fits perfectly flat in your pocket so you can take it easily on adventures.
What’s your favourite product from your shop?
Yarrow Face Serum – For Dry + Sensitive Skin. I love this product right now because my skin is especially dry from the winter we have been having. This product is essential-oil-FREE! It smells earthy from the organic hemp seed oil. Yarrow is one of my favourite plants that we forage, it’s nice and gentle on the skin and helps lock in moisture all day long.
What’s your favourite local shop?
We love Muttonhead (a Canadian clothing brand) in Roncesvalles! They have the best Canadian brands, and are so kind, and are dog-friendly!
