How would you describe your business?
I strive to capture the vibe and story behind each building and street corner. Using professional watercolour, I am not afraid of using a variety of colours or distorting lines to give places a unique cartoon style. My artwork is colourful and fun! I reproduce each piece on high-quality cotton rag, acid-free, heavyweight paper using Giclée technology, which preserves every detail, making the prints feel like the original artwork.
What was the inspiration to start The Sketch Nest?
My employment contract ended and while I was looking for another job, I felt the need to explore other avenues that I was passionate about, like sketching. I have a background in architectural drafting and fine arts, and a strong interest in architecture and urban planning. I came across a free urban sketching course online, which inspired me to give it a shot. I bought some basic materials, took a few more courses, and the rest is history.
What’s your bestselling product?
Interestingly enough, my bestselling product is my very first sketch, which showcases a beautiful corner of Kensington Market in Toronto.
Why do you think it’s so popular?
Kensington Market is a vibrant multicultural hub in the heart of Toronto, known for its mix unique shops, street art, small bakeries and traditional restaurants. I think this sketch is so popular because it captures the market’s distinctive bohemian and colourful style. I had the chance to ask one of my clients why she choose that specific sketch, and she told me it brings her good memories, it captures the vibe of the place and makes her smile every time she looks at it.
What’s your favourite sketch that you’ve created?
My favourite sketch is one featuring Victoria University, which is one of a three-part University of Toronto series. I love the complexity of the sketch and different layers, which definitely challenged me. I also like the combination of colours, which highlight the building’s features and beauty, while capturing its unique character.
What’s your favourite local Toronto shop?
Blue Banana, in Kensington Market, was among my favourite shops. Sadly, the store is now closed. The place was known for being a perfect place to find a last-minute gift or piece of local art.
