What inspired you to start your business?

I have very sensitive skin, and I was getting tired of spending so much money on skincare that still contained fragrances, essential oils and other ingredients that caused my skin to flare up. I started looking at clean ingredients and formulating my own products with boreal forest plants that I was already collecting through my other interests as a biologists. It was the perfect synergy, and Wekusko Wild was born.

How do you describe your brand?

I am a one-woman show – my professional training is in botany so I have an excellent knowledge of what plants can provide benefit to skin. I supported that with training in formulation and a lot of experimentation until I was creating products that I could not live without. My products are entirely free of essential oils, which is unique, as they are hidden in so many ‘natural’ products that are available to consumers. It is really difficult to avoid them, and I know from experience how they can sensitize and damage skin over time. I believe in micro batch crafting with care. Each product is made in very small batches (usually less than 10 units), hand packaged and labelled. This ensures that all products are effective, fresh, and there is little to no waste created. These products are focused on those wishing to see visible results in their skin, at any age.

What’s your bestselling product & why do you think it’s so popular?

Rosehip probiotic eye cream.

The rosehip eye cream is amazingly hydrating and moisturizing, with the benefit of probiotics to strengthen the delicate skin in the eye area. Because the ingredients are all very mild, this cream can be used on the eyelids and close to the eyes without any concern of irritation or redness.

What’s your favourite product from your own shop?

My bearberry probiotic face cream is my go to morning and night. It is so hydrating and moisturizing without leaving my skin greasy or shiny, and it lasts all day and night in our cold Canadian climate. It is truly a must have in my opinion, for all skin types.

What’s one of your favourite local shops?

I can’t pick a favorite! I support all local businesses whenever possible – it’s what makes communities stronger.
