Wild Island Tea makes loose leaf teas, jellies and most recently a line of flavoured sugar cubes. We make our tea blends using locally foraged botanicals. We forage for a variety of plants on our own property here in Conception Harbour and from a number of regions around the island, mainly the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas. We harvest responsibly and process in small batches, then blend them with other organic herbs and teas. We source all our other botanical ingredients and tea bases right here in Canada through a number of reputable suppliers. We also source some teas directly from the farms. We only use certified organic ingredients and most of our teas are Fair Trade Certified, and we avoid the use of natural or artificial flavourings and preservatives. By popular request, we do carry two flavoured tea varieties.

What inspired you to start your business?

I started my business in 2017 mostly as a creative outlet. I had an interest in local botanicals and their properties and thought that creating a line of unique and functional tea blends would be a great way to expand that knowledge. Newfoundland and Labrador has a long history of subsisting and creating off of the land. Foraging is a popular hobby here in the province.

What’s your bestseller? Why do you think it’s so popular?

Our best selling tea variety is our Newfoundland Spruce and Chai Black Tea Blend, and our flavoured sugars have been a huge hit this past holiday season.

Our Newfoundland Spruce and Chai Black Tea uses a second flush darjeeling tea base sourced from India, a blend of warm masala spices, and loads of black spruce tips that are picked as soon as they bud in the late spring. Spruce tips are loaded with vitamin C and can help to support a healthy and balanced diet.

Our flavoured sugar cubes are popular because they’re just so cute! They add a special little detail to any tea party.

What’s your personal favourite product from your own shop?

My personal favourite product from our shop with now is our Coconut and Chaga Hot Cocoa Mix, made from organic coconut milk powder, chaga mushroom and espresso powder. Its creamy and rich and full of chaga, the king of antioxidants!

What’s your favourite local Newfoundland shop?

This is always a difficult question because its nearly impossible to choose one, but, Urban Market 1919 in St. John’s and the Western Food Hub out of Corner Brook are doing an amazing job of promoting local makers and making locally produced food available to smaller outport communities.
